Spotify Introduces Beta Feature Allowing Users to Customize Their Music Preference Algorithm
During a presentation at the SXSW conference this Friday, Spotify’s co-CEO Gustav Söderström unveiled a groundbreaking beta feature that grants users unprecedented control over their music recommendation algorithm. For the first time, subscribers will be able to view and modify their Taste Profile, the sophisticated algorithmic framework that determines their personalized music suggestions.
The Taste Profile serves as the foundation for Spotify’s recommendation engine, powering features such as the popular Discover Weekly playlist, Made For You suggestions, and the annual Spotify Wrapped summary. This algorithmic model analyzes user behavior to curate personalized content experiences.
The initial rollout will target Premium subscribers in New Zealand, offering them a comprehensive view of their consumption data across all content types, including music tracks, podcasts, and audiobooks. Users will gain the ability to modify their profile and adjust future recommendations by requesting more or fewer suggestions within specific musical categories or moods. These modifications will immediately influence the content displayed on the application’s main interface.
The feature can be found by selecting the user’s profile image and scrolling through the available options. Profile adjustments can be made through conversational language inputs, making the process intuitive for users.
While Spotify has previously provided limited tools for profile management, these were restrictive in scope. Earlier versions only permitted users to exclude specific songs or playlists from influencing their recommendations. The limited functionality and the opaque nature of the Taste Profile system led to frequent user complaints about irrelevant or unwanted suggestions.
A significant challenge facing many Spotify users involves account sharing scenarios. Family members often access the same account through shared devices like smart speakers or television systems, while teenagers may control music selection during car rides through CarPlay integration.
Additionally, users frequently consume content that doesn’t represent their genuine musical preferences, such as ambient sounds for sleep, quiet background music, or children’s entertainment. Many users forget to exclude such content or lack the time to regularly curate their listening history, resulting in skewed recommendation algorithms.
This issue has notably affected the annual Spotify Wrapped experience, with many parents finding their year-end summaries dominated by children’s content rather than their personal musical journey. The problem has generated widespread discussion among users who have long sought a solution to this algorithmic contamination.
According to Spotify, the Taste Profile customization feature will begin its gradual deployment in New Zealand over the upcoming weeks, with plans for broader international expansion following the initial testing phase.
